Emily Reo’s recently released Witch Mtn is a eerie and murky follow-up EP on the respectful Breakfast of Champs Records. The influences of Grouper, Ratatat, and mid-career M83 set the stage for some early morning soundscapes and grim echoes worthy of repeat listens. I highly suggest you check this out pronto.

Out of the scene for a bit now but back with that genuine supersonically spacious melodies, Picture Atlantic is streaming their entire EP, When Everything Is Numbers right now. Painted with a bit more of an electronic flavor and less aggressive demeanor, the band is going in a more pop direction with grace and meaningful execution. Nothing is forced and they sound comfortable, a very noticeable trait that can be found in this charming follow-up.
When a press release has the words “DJ Shadow” and “Entroducing…“, I can’t help but be very skeptical and wary on how the attached music sounds. After all, those are some pretty big shoes to fill. But with Bay Area beatmaster Benji Illgen aka Mophono’s (also aka DJ Centipede) new album, Cut From Crush (Out Feb. 15th 2011), the spirit of Entroducing… is alive with the deep surreal hip-hop and shimmering electronic numbers that sound like a modernized soundtrack to a Kubrik film. It’s impressive and I’ll be following his work from now on.
