It’s our sixth Snob Theater and it’s going to be another special evening of amazing music and stand-up comedy. In case you’re not familiar with Snob Theater, Snob Theater is a show that features the best in the Bay Area’s indie rock bands and stand-up comedians. The small 60+ seat Dark Room Theater makes for the most intimate of performances and provides a unique and exciting atmosphere. Snob Theater is an event that showcases the comfort of the performers as they take chances in a stripped-down setting.

Our musical guests this month include Poor Bailey and Con Brio.

Poor Bailey are earning their reputation as a respected group of young troubadours with almost frightening ease. For the past few years they’ve been tagged “oddball folk” by the music press. Their double LP Pyrite and Gold is a soundly articulated slice of modern life rolled into two very different records, both bursting with all the heartfelt poetry for which Poor Bailey have earned their acclaim. Singer / crooner Scott Allbright’s crack in his voice overextends, with clumsy thump of a misplaced heart. Allbright and his fellow band-mates (John Snapp on bass, Travis Harris on guitar and keys, and Danny Casentini on drums) push modern folk to a glorious new level of depth, a maturation of texture, writing and delivery.

In the new millennium, soul has become big business again. The resurgence of seasoned soul sisters like Bettye LaVette and Sharon Jones, the champions of the new generation’s purist strain are Xandra Corpora and Con Brio. Xandra’s raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside those aforementioned soul queens while Con Brio themselves reach pocket-digging near-perfection. It’s amazing how the group yields the sounds of a band at the top of its game. Their latest effort, From The Hip is a gift to soul music and should help the genre win new fans–with an album this infectious, you’d have to be made of stone to resist the funk.
