Yay! Time to take all the money I made in Vegas last weekend and turn it into some serious wax. How can I not celebrate a holiday (it’s a holiday for me!) created by employees from one of my favorite record stores, NH/Maine’s Bull Moose Records. I remember being 18 yrs old and spending hours upon hours walking around wishing for a higher income so I could eventually buy…uhh…everything. While I am not there yet, I do have a few records in mind for today, but I may also browse for hours and pick out shit I don’t even need (a more likely scenario). Anyway, if you’re in the Bay Area today, you have some pretty awesome appearances to check out.
First off we Charlotte Gainsbourg doing a record signing at noon today at the Amoeba Records in SF. Also Jónsi will pay a visit to play some of the quieter songs off his masterpiece Go at the SF Amoeba Records. I was lucky enough to catch him last night at the Palace of Fine Arts and let me tell you, it was life altering. He might do a record signing but Amoeba isn’t listing it on their website so I can’t be for sure.
The Rasputin in Berkeley has a buttload of hip-hop artists performing today but The Pack seems to be making an appearance. Get your Vans on.
The Berkeley Amoeba Records is presenting UK folk blues group Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs at 2pm and and Oakland’s star DJ, DJ Platurn!
There’s definitely more, so go out and support your local record store.
With over 150 special limited edition releases scheduled for release on Record Store Day, there’s one record I am looking forward to the most, One Am Radio’s new 7″, Credible Threats. Featuring the title track and a unique Mae Shi remix, the record also comes with 3-D glasses for the video below. The new track seems to be a departure from what One Am Radio usually plays, which is more mellow and minimalistic. This sounds way more upbeat and similar to something John Vanderslice might have cooked up. It doesn’t matter to me though, the song sounds fantastic and they are way overdue for a new record.
Happy Record Store Day!
