Opening act The Twilight Sad fit squarely within what I had anticipated from an opener on this tour: folk-rock, emotionally potent, and very Scottish. Their tunes were solid, but like everyone else in the audience my attention felt more focused on getting a vantage point for when Frightened Rabbit took to the stage. There was also something lost with Twilight Sad; they seemed bored and exhausted.

However the lead singer was very energetic and had a Morrissey-ish stage presence, which was nice to watch. After a properly mid-length set, Twilight Sad made way for the folks we were all chomping at the bit to see.

Shows like this always catch me a little off guard, what I mean by that is this is an act that the entire audience can easily sing-a-long to. When dealing with musicians of this caliber, the performances can feel a little forced and the intimacy I’ve come to love from seeing bands in much smaller spaces just doesn’t exist.

With a passion and skill few truly possess, Scott Hutchison defied these stereotypes with an amazing presence. Throughout Frightened Rabbit’s amazing set, he felt genuine and seemingly poured all in him into each melody. Teamed with Grant Hutchison (drums, vocals), Billy Kennedy (guitar, keyboards, bass) and Andy Monaghan (keyboards, guitar, bass), the band offered each song as if they needed to convince the audience of their talent.

Last year’s fantastically emotional 2008′s The Midnight Organ Fight was nearly played in full and the audience (as expected) knew every word. Such an effort was unnecessary with the palpable sense of the crowd’s affection, but it made the performance all the more impressive.

I would love to see them again but without the choir of adoring fans reciting every word.
