The Road – Release Date: October 16, 2009

I have been waiting for this film for a long time and it looks as though it will not disappoint. This may be the most important movie of the year, I guarantee it.

Anti-Christ – Release Date: US Date TBA

As a huge Lars von Trier fan as well as a horror film fan, I am very much looking forward to this. This movie was all the buzz at the Cannes Film Festival but not the way you think. It got gasps, boos, cheers, laughs, applause; that’s what I called mixed reviews.

A Prophet (Un prophete) – Release Date: US Date TBA

Winner of the Grand Prix Prize at Cannes, A Prophet is about a young Arab man sent to a French prison where he eventually becomes a mafia kingpin. From what I’ve heard, it’s a pretty badass flick. Watch for it.

District 9 – Release Date: August 14, 2009

Encounters of the Third Kind for a new generation. An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology. Will it have a message of immigration and ethnic cleansing? Looks that way.

Medicine for Melancholy - Release Date: Out Now

A 24-hour love story about black hipsters that are marginalized in very-pasty-white San Francisco which is of course scored to ghostly white, Urban Outfitters compilation ready white indie rock (Au Revoire Simone, Casiotone For The Painfully Alone). The identity politics theme in the film however make it not a total wash and the filmmaker could be one to look out for, Wally Cenac of “The Daily Show” stars.

On a side note: See “Up,” it’s probably the best of the year.
