Every once in a while there will come a band that sounds pretty much exactly like their band name suggests (Holy Fuck comes to mind) and Greycoats are exactly that. The quintet hones its talent for bombastic atmospheric rock, yet still preserves their edge of unpredictability. The band generally comes close to space rock bands like Failure and Oceansize yet set themselves apart by creating a sound that is truly unique, which isn’t an easy feat to tackle. If their latest album, Setting Fire to the Great Unknown, proves anything, it is that Greycoats find solid ground between pop experimentation and the tradition of born-in-the-bone, balls-out rock. The album creates massive soundscapes scratched in black and white and is rife with themes of isolation, disconnection, abandonment, loss, longing, and escape. It would seem that Greycoats are off to a great start. So enjoy…
