After catching a screening of the Swedish vampire flick “Let The Right One In” last night, I realized that mainstream horror really hasn’t won over both audiences and critics since The Sixth Sense. Some would even argue that The Sixth Sense isn’t even classified as a horror flick (more of a thriller). Granted last night’s film wasn’t the first time I thought about this, but it certainly made me analyze the current state of the horror film genre. Since the 8 Films to Die For Horrorfest has been a complete disappointment, it’s up to foreign and indie horror to come to the rescue. Here’s four films to rent or see in theaters that will chill you to the bone…
Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in)
Sweden
2008
I loved it. This is more or less about adolescence and compromise with a supernatural twist. Very stylish and frightening.
The Last Winter
United States
2006
Staring the gritty Ron Perlman, The Last Winter crosses the isolation and insanity of The Shining with the imaginative sci-fi nature of The Thing. Don’t let that scare you away though, it’s able to keep a creepy atmospheric mood while bringing on the original ideas.
The Orphanage
Spain
2007
Heart-wrenching and disturbing. This film needs to seen by lovers of strong story and terrifying imagery.

Spain
2007
Before there was Quarantine, there was this. I still haven’t seen it, but from what I’ve heard, it’s the best zombie flick in a long time. Move over Romero.
Speaking of movies. This “meh” track from Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Mike Patton of…uhh…a shitload of bands, was taken from the Body of Lies soundtrack. Hope you like it better than I do.
