Bitone
Their Mission,
To restore the lives and hopes of Ugandan children between 8 and 18 years old who are traumatized by the death of their parents or loss of their home due to disease, war, or economic hardship.
Their Philosophy,
Every child, regardless of their cultural background, color, gender or race has the potential and deserves the chance to excel and shine.
Their Vision,
By providing basic food and shelter, a nurturing environment, an academic education combined with a unique and strong performance program of traditional Ugandan dance, music, and theater, our children’s lives can again become meaningful and joyful.
Bitone (“talents”) was founded in 2004 by its current Executive Director, Ugandan native Lawrence Sekalegga who holds a B.A. in Music from Makerere University, Kampala-Uganda. Bitone operates from a rented home that can accommodate up to 25 children in Lugoba village, in Kawempe division, Kampala, Uganda 6 kilometers from the capital city of Kampala. The troupe is extremely talented and has recorded their own traditional Ugandan songs as well as a tear jerking version of Björk‘s “All Is Full Of Love.” The songs you hear are made from a single laptop and one microphone in the center’s living room (which also serves as the dining and bedroom depending on the hour). The record is being sold as a fundraising tool for the center’s growth and stability. Have yourself a listen…
