Kuestionnaire: interceiving

Montreal instrumental noise pop band interceiving can lazily be compared to bands like Holy Fuck and Battles, but they are far more than that. You see, interceiving expands the genre of dynamic instrumental pop by making wildly fun and taking it to the realm of film soundtracks as well commercials for the Canadian Centre For Architecture and Montreal Tattoo Convention. While their brand of the genre may be a bit more accessible, interceiving is still a bludgeoning force live, boosting improvisational skills and mathematical precision mixed with danceable grooves made for the masses.

You can listen to and purchase the interceiving EP here.

This week organ / synth / noise maker Chris Carriere answers the Kuestionnaire.

_____________

1. Could you state your name and what you do in the band?
Chris Carriere – I make noise with various devices (synth, controlled feedback, etc.) and I produce the band’s recordings.

2. How would you describe your sound?
Experimotional.

3. What is your favorite local band?
Malajube (Montreal).

4. Any concerts that blew your mind recently?
The Sadies in Montreal. I was watching them play and couldn’t help thinking that these brothers were born to do this. It was really great.

5. Any non-musical influences you would like to mention?
David Lynch, Jim Jarmusch, Norman McLaren (National Film Board animation and stop-motion innovator from the 50-60s). He did things like etch sounds (musical notes) directly on the film stock, essentially composing a soundtrack by writing notes frame-by-frame.

6. If your music was to be the theme of a film/TV show, what would it be?
28 Days Later would have been fun.

7. What musician/artist would you like to collaborate with for a day?
Outkast, Bjork, Mike Patton.

8. What is the album you listen to on a cold rainy day?
The Pearl (Harold Budd and Brian Eno)

9. List four songs you would listen to on a roadtrip?
Índios Do Norte – Forro in the Dark
Like A Buffalo Jump – Paul Linklater
Brainwave – Nomo
Ursuline – Malajube

10. Where do you see yourselves in 7 years?
Doing film soundtracks, touring and the occasional special sound installation project.

11. What is the last book you read?
The Long Tail by Chris Anderson. Fascinating and encouraging for niche market music like ours.

12. Is image a factor in music or is it a waste of time?
It’s the main factor for some and a needless energy drain for others. For us, it’s not a factor.

13. Any embarrassing moments on stage you would like to share?
During a set a few years ago, a spectator accidentally unplugged my set-up causing it to go dead. It took a minute or two to realise what had happened and plug it back in. That was a long minute.

14. Any favorite tour locations?
Haven’t really played out of town as of yet.

15. Lastly, what is your present state of mind?
Grounded.
