Bring Christmas Joy To Those Who Need It Most

Music, News

What if at one point, we all just stopped in our tracks and looked in the reflective glass of the giant department stores we aimlessly roam about during this holiday season and thought about what this holiday really means. For me, it’s family and taking care of those who need to know they are still loved. This year I gave $25 to the Chernobyl Children’s Project. Chernobyl Children’s Project International develops, facilitates and affects long-term sustainable community-based solutions and provides medical and humanitarian assistance to the victims and survivors of Chernobyl. After a friend of mine introduced me to their cause, I watched the video above and took time out to watch the 40 minute long HBO special right here.

For those of you on Facebook, my buddy has started a pledge using the Causes app in order to try and raise $300 (the cost of a single Gore-Tex patch used in the life-saving heart operations as featured in Chernobyl Heart). You can donate here if you want. Or maybe there is another charity you’re donating to. Maybe you put a $20 bill in the Salvation Army can for the first time, maybe you bought a 16′ pizza and brought it over to an old homeless man, maybe you went one step further and are volunteering at homeless shelters. All I know is that you have a small sense of pride after you make some sort of contribution to society. If we all just did a little bit, that promise of change we’ve been hearing so much about might come true.

Shawn, I wanted to let you and your readers know that Sasha Levkin, the boy in the video you posted above, and seven other young men, were just moved into a home of their own, built by our volunteers and funded with donations. This terrace of independent living apartments for mentally and physically disabled young adults in the first project of it’s kind in Belarus. I last saw Sasha in October, and they are all adjusting very well.

In the Chernobyl Heart video, Sasha asks for a TV. In case anyone wants to know, he has one … and a dvd player, and an MP3 player, and a CD player … gifts from volunteers!
