Dredg was very energetic the night of August 6th 2011; they also played fairly flawlessly (especially lead singer Gavin Hayes). It seemed like the band was providing their best performance for the last night of the tour due to the fact that they had a large amount of family and friends there.
Around Hungover on a Tuesday, their merch guy ran across the stage wearing a Chuckles (from this year’s Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy) mask on his face and crotch, wearing only underwear underneath. Everyone in the band seemed more amused than annoyed while they tried not to screw up the song. Dredg seemed to be more than content that night as well, Gavin was smiling and joking with bassist Drew Roulette and guitarist Mark Engles in between songs. Not too much crowd banter from Gavin directed to the crowd though.
The audience was somewhat stagnant except for the first row, which is normal for a Dredg show since their music is fairly tame and entrancing to begin with. The Great American Music Hall didn’t seem to be at capacity as well. While not sold out, the venue was noticeably packed with true fans of the band.
Halfway through the show, Drew lit up his joint at the beginning Of The Room while a staff member from the venue came running side stage yelling “Drew, Drew!”, I don’t think he heard him. Drew offered Gavin a hit and Gavin accepted, pretty much encapsulating the mood of the night in one small moment between band members.
Dredg performed an alternate and moving ending to the already epic Canyon Behind Her, which was followed by the climactic Down to the Cellar. The show provided a more intimate and special feeling than most Dredg shows, mainly due to the presence of family and close friends. Those in attendance were just lucky to witness what unfolded that night.
