Twin Sister

On July 26th, three burgeoning Brooklyn bands invaded the Rickshaw stop, each with their own distinct style. Unfortunately for me, the first of the three, Beach Fossils, was finishing their set as I walked in the door. Their debut self titled LP has been on high rotation in my ipod as of late, so I was definitely disappointed that I missed their laid back, low-fi, surf sound in a live setting. I’ll just have to mark my calendar for the next time they come to town.

Next was the five piece, Twin Sister. I had the pleasure of catching this band in Brooklyn for their EP release show this past May. That stifling hot and steamy show inside the Glasslands gallery that would have given the fire marshall an aneurysm was a pretty magical setting, but their set at The Rickshaw was a bit more polished and comfortable, not to mention, sans technical difficulties.

Playing songs from their two EPs, Color Your Life and Vampires With Dreaming Kids, front woman Andrea Estella crooned with her low, but smooth voice in mesmerizing fashion. Even with their disco-esque song “All Around And Away We Go”, the crowd never broke out into more than a collective sway, but it was evident the whole room was fully engaged from start to finish.

Bear In Heaven

Bear In Heaven

Bear In Heaven, the project of Jon Philpot, played last. Since their first release in 2003, they have been cultivating their sound which highlights synth chord progressions favoring minor chords and effects laden vocals delivered in authoritarian fashion. Not surprisingly, it is quite unique on the current indie landscape. With their latest release, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, they have made a distinct statement and have been garnering praise from nearly all the taste makers out there. Now that they have everybody’s attention, Bear In Heaven is definitely a band to keep an eye on in the near future.
